World Environmental Day – 6 June 2022

“It is everyone’s responsibility to protect our environment”

BESG partnered with 20 community members from Dambuza (a semi-urban township located in the greater Edendale area, outside Pietermaritzburg) on 06-JUNE 2022, to observe World Environmental Day 2022 and on 07-JUNE to coincide with World Food Safety Week.

Activities held included community members clearing a local stream, which had become a dump site, thereby adding dangerous toxins onto the water and the ecosystem in and around the stream.

Community members also started a communal garden, thereby addressing household food security and aiming to generate future income for the community.

We were pleased to have various partners who collaborated with BESG in making this event the success that it was. We would like to thank the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) for supporting the campaign and providing gloves and plastics to participants.

The Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) team provided an informative discussion on River Health.

Mahlathini Development Foundation offered permaculture training.

A big thanks to The Beverage Company – Coo-ee for sponsoring refreshments, T-shirts, and caps, and Sunshine Seedling Services for donating a variety of vegetable seedlings that were planted in the communal garden created.

BESG will continue to work together with the Dambuza community group on various projects, including the initiatives implemented during this past week.

This event was hosted and facilitated by Sthembile Dladla. Sthe is an environmental specialist who is passionate about helping communities adapt to climate change.
